THE FRANKLIN SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY DRIVE

Frequently Asked Questions

How important are the computers to the curriculum?
Computer technology is very important for the education of our students. Computers are now part of our everyday landscape. The instructional technology departments’ plan is to integrate computers as tools integral to teaching and learning and problem solving. Computers will never replace the classroom teacher, but they enable a teacher to be more effective, to individualize teaching for each child, and to immediately access up to date information and resources.

Why have a campaign for technology? This is a public school, and we pay taxes. Why doesn’t the City of Newton School Department buy the computers?
Although the City of Newton has been purchasing computers for years, money has been tight and progress has been slow. A tremendous amount of money is needed to expand and upgrade the two high schools. If we are to give our students the experience with technology they deserve, and give our teachers the tools they need to do their job at an exceptionally high level, we need to contribute resources in addition to those provided by the City. The NPS have a tech plan, but state and city budgets have been tight, and technology purchases have lagged behind standards. Although the state mandates a technology plan, it does not provide funds to implement it.

Are there grants available?
Yes. Significant headway has been made in implementing technology at Franklin through the teachers’ pursuit of local and federal grants. Unprecedented at other schools, one teacher in every grade at Franklin has written for and received technology grants. Newton Public Schools has also linked equipment assignments with teacher professional training, and Franklin teachers are applying now for those spots. In addition certain equipment is being provided by Newton Public Schools to provide some equity across the elementary schools. Unfortunately, these efforts cannot keep pace with the need in our classrooms.

Are we going to have to do this every few years as the computers become outdated?
This is a difficult question to answer. There is no line item for technology in the budget at this time. However, the PTO has established three discreet fundraisers that have provided financing in the range of $5,000 a year: Company Sponsors recognized in the Directory, Holiday Teacher Gifts, and a Spring Technology Raffle (last year’s iPod Raffle). This will help satisfy ongoing maintenance and replacement needs.

Why purchase Macs instead of PCs?
The Newton Schools use Macintosh computers throughout the elementary schools. All staff have been trained on the Macintosh, and all peripherals and software work on the Mac platform. Mac continues to be a user friendly platform for young students.

Can I donate my old computer?
The school’s wish list specifies computers by model to ensure servicibility by the school system and compatibility with educational software.

Can I earmark my contribution for a specific classroom?
Computers will be purchased and installed according to the priorities of the curriculum. Your best opportunity to see your child’s classroom receive what it needs is to ensure the success of the PTO fundraising effort.
