Dear Franklin families,
Franklin parents and others are invited to volunteer to take the leftover lunch food from Franklin Elementary School to the Newton Community Freedge located on 420 Watertown Street in Nonantum. This will help reduce food wastage, provide food for those in need and help fight hunger. One step at a time.
You may sign up for a volunteer slot at https://volunteersignup.org/K3DYC.
Food pickups will occur on Wednesdays and Fridays shortly before school dismissal. We are seeking one volunteer per shift. The volunteer may park in the faculty parking lot and enter the cafeteria through Door 14. In case there is no-one to let you in, you may call the main desk at 617-559-9500 and inform them of your arrival.
The volunteer will then take the food from the cafeteria (expected to be one or two boxes) and deliver it to Newton Community Freedge at 420 Watertown Street. (Central Cleaner’s Parking lot). The Freedge is a 24/7 refrigerator and pantry that provides free food and personal care products to anyone who needs them. For more information about the Freedge, which is a volunteer-led initiative organized by the Newton Food Pantry in collaboration with other local organizations, see https://newtonfoodpantry.org/get-involved/newton-freedge/.
There will be a 15 minute pickup window at Franklin on Wednesday between 12:05 and 12:20 and Fridays between 2:25 and 2:40, and the food should be delivered to the Freedge shortly thereafter. It is fine for the volunteer to bring children to the Freedge, as they can help unpack the boxes of food, stock the refrigerator and pantry.
Thank you for considering this fun, easy and meaningful way to decrease hunger and cut down on food waste in our community!
